Family and school partnerships are immensely important. Teachers at this school express what they are doing to support their students families.

John Ippolito, Professor of Education at York University discusses parent involvement and engagement in diverse and multi-lingual schools. He discusses a pilot project that was successful in improving the relationship between immigrant families, and schools.

What can be done to build parent/teacher relationships? What can parents do? What can teachers do?

  1. Thank you for sharing this video. I really enjoyed it! As a future ELL teacher, this information is incredibility helpful. I appreciated John's comments about community forums and inviting/seeking out parents to make sure teachers and administrators are approaching their school's parent populations appropriately. Additionally, I liked the idea of color-coding the agenda (like language discussion groups) at community forums and creating a welcoming protocol (15-10 minute meeting with the principal and a translator, if needed).

  2. I appreciate the vast suggestions the video provides, catering towards diverse schools facing additional challenges. Barriers play into parents' involvement (or lack there of), and often we make assumptions that define them as parents. Like John Ippolito says, we have to consider ways to make parents feel welcome and like they belong.

  3. Hi Grace,
Nice topic and very insightful and helpful video. I am glad that there are many educators dedicated their time and energy to engage and involve parents, especially parents who don't speak English to their children's education. I especially appropriated they provide interpreters to help parents' involvement in schools.Thank you.
